What is the true source of happiness?

My wife and I recently visited our niece at the hospital, where she was recovering from surgery. We spent the evening with her and despite her pain, she kept us all laughing, happy and buoyant. The room was filled with spirit and life. We kissed her goodnight and I promised to be back in the morning to pick her up at discharge time.
When I got to her room the next day, I encountered two uniformed attendants stripping her bed and cleaning the floor. Everything was empty and felt so sterile, dead and lonely. I stepped out to verify the room number, because this did not feel like the place where we had enjoyed so many laughs the evening before. I checked my phone and saw a message saying that she had been discharged and was waiting for me downstairs in the coffee shop with her mother. I paused for a few more minutes in the empty room, oblivious to the cleaning work that was going on around me. All the surroundings were exactly the same as the night before, but her absence had altered the atmosphere completely.
My dear friends, everything in this world is comprised of essence and form. Essence is the core definition of our being. It is the driver and source of everything we feel and experience. My niece has a beautiful and powerful essence that livens up everything, wherever she goes. I met her in the coffee shop and gave her the biggest hug. I was deeply grateful to see her again. Her presence in my life had taken on a whole new meaning as a result of the sharp contrast I had just experienced.
Most of us spend such a large part of our lives chasing material possessions because we believe them to be our source of happiness. However, without essence, they represent worthless forms that we will leave behind when we depart. A scarf, for example, is most beautiful because of the person wearing it. On its own, it is just a pretty piece of cloth. When we recognise, value and honour the essence that is present in everyone we encounter, regardless of their surroundings, attire or possessions, we begin to appreciate how extraordinary each one of us is. Life takes on a whole new dimension, because we become dazzled by the light that glows within them rather than the material glitter that surrounds them…
As we settle into the year 2020, let us resolve to seek, appreciate and respect essence over form, and also take the time daily to reflect upon our own individual essence, where true peace resides…

Have a blessed week ahead my dear friends, graced with love and happiness in every moment...
