Did curiosity kill the cat…?

In the recent months, I have heard many people of global influence question, ‘if the oceans temperature rises by one degree Celsius, what’s the big deal’? That got me thinking…these guys must be smart to get to where they are today, so is there any truth to their opinions? At face value, for example, if the atmospheric temperature of New York City rose by one degree Celsius, it would barely be noticeable. Could they be equating water and air temperature as being one and the same thing, I wondered? To satisfy my curiosity, I got out my calculator…my saviour in such times of pressing crisis…lol.
What if I took a section of the Atlantic Ocean equal to the same area of New York City, which according to Wikipedia covers approximately 785 square kilometres, and calculated the volume of water, based on a reported average depth of 3,340 metres? How much energy would a one degree Celsius rise over such a massive volume of water represent? Some quick calculations on the back of an envelope estimated this figure at approximately 351 million Megawatts – a staggering number! But, what does that mean? How can we best visualise such a large number?
I looked up New York City’s daily electrical power consumption on line, which is reported at some 11,000 Megawatts. Therefore, my simplistic analysis showed that one could power the whole city of New York for over seven centuries with this amount of energy! Even if my estimates are not exact, the bottom line is that a one degree Celsius rise in ocean temperature is not something we can afford to ignore. Of course, if that poor cat were exposed to this amount of energy, my curiosity would have killed it for sure…lol
My dear friends, it behoves us all to take proactive action towards climate change, because its impact on our beautiful environment can be severe. I fondly recall my days growing up along the pristine coastline of Mombasa, ever fascinated by its rich marine life; and visiting the safari parks across East Africa that enjoyed an abundance of natural wildlife. It is my sincere hope that our children and their future generations will not be deprived of the rich experiences of nature, wherever they may live…
